The Bolster Beneath Your Knees: Why This Small Detail Matters

If you’ve joined one of our sound journeys, you may have noticed a small, deliberate detail before the sound even begins — a bolster, gently placed beneath your knees as you lie down. It looks like a simple comfort item. But there’s a quiet piece of body mechanics behind why we set it up this way, every single time.

    Meet the Psoas

Deep within your core, connecting your spine to your legs, lies a muscle called the psoas. It’s one of the few muscles in the body directly linked to how we hold stress — when we sit for long hours, or stay in a state of alertness, the psoas tends to shorten and tighten, often without us noticing. Over time, this can show up as a dull tightness across the lower back, or a restlessness that makes it hard to fully settle.

    Why We Elevate the Knees

When you lie flat with your legs fully extended, the lower spine naturally arches, placing more demand on the muscles that stabilise the pelvis — including the psoas. By placing a bolster beneath the knees, the hips and knees settle into a gentle, supported flexion.

This small shift means the psoas no longer has to work to hold the pelvis in place, allowing it to soften. It also helps ease the natural curve of the lower spine, taking pressure off the lower back — something many people notice especially if they’re prone to back discomfort, or tend to sleep on their side.

    The Breath Connection

Here’s the part we find most meaningful: when the body doesn’t need to expend effort holding a position, the breath tends to find more room to deepen and slow on its own.

Breath is one of the body’s most direct pathways to the nervous system — and it’s often through this slower, fuller breathing that the body begins its shift from alertness toward rest. This isn’t a claim that a bolster alone induces relaxation; rather, it’s one of several small conditions we try to create, so the body has less working against it, and more space to settle.

    More Than Just Comfort

It’s easy to assume a bolster is simply there to make lying down more pleasant — and it does that too. But its placement beneath the knees is intentional, rooted in how the body responds to support versus effort. A small, quiet detail, doing more than it first appears to.

    Every Detail, Considered

This is one of many small choices that shape a session at The Hidden Jane — soft mats, pillows at different heights, bolsters, and blankets of varying weight, all designed so your body can lie down completely, without needing to adjust or make do. Because it’s often only once the body has truly let its guard down that sound can meet you where you need it most.
